Silves sits inland from the coast, fifteen kilometres north of Portimão, and feels a world away from the beach resorts that define the Algarve for most visitors. This was the region's capital under Moorish rule, a prosperous trading city on the banks of the Arade, and the castle that crowns the hilltop remains the largest and best-preserved medieval fortification in the Algarve. The town has a quieter, older character than the coastal strip — narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with terracotta roofs, and a cathedral that speaks to the weight of history in a way the modern marina developments do not.

The castle is the centrepiece. Built in red sandstone during the period of Al-Andalus, it was taken by Christian forces under King Sancho I in the late twelfth century after a prolonged siege, then retaken by the Moors, then conquered again. The walls are intact, the ramparts walkable, and the views from the top take in the town, the river valley, and the hills of the Serra de Monchique beyond. Inside the walls the space is open and grassy, with cisterns and archaeological remnants that hint at the scale of the original settlement. It is not a castle in the northern European sense — no great hall or furnished chambers — but the structure itself is impressive, and the sense of standing in a place that mattered strategically for centuries is palpable.

Below the castle, the Sé — Silves Cathedral — occupies the site of a former mosque. It is a solid, austere building in Gothic style, built shortly after the Reconquista, and the interior is cool and dim after the brightness outside. The town's market, held near the riverfront, is worth timing your visit around if you are there on a Saturday morning. It is a working market, not a tourist attraction, with local produce, fish, cheese, and the sort of everyday bustle that gives you a sense of the town as a place people live rather than simply visit.
