Every Sunday, the riverside town of Alvor hosts a farmers' market where local producers sell fresh fruit and vegetables, artisan cheeses, honey, homemade cakes and herbs.

The market sits by the beautiful Alvor estuary, so you can combine your shopping with a stroll along the waterfront and perhaps breakfast or coffee at one of the nearby cafés.

You'll find seasonal produce at its freshest, often picked the same morning. The quality and flavour are noticeably superior to supermarket equivalents, and prices are very reasonable.

Local honey is particularly worth seeking out, as is the artisan cheese. The homemade cakes and pastries make excellent treats for a beach picnic or afternoon at your accommodation.

The market offers a genuine taste of local life and a chance to meet the people who grow and produce your food. Many stallholders speak some English and are happy to offer advice on how to prepare or use their products.

Alvor is a charming fishing town on the western Algarve, about 20 minutes from Portimão and easily reached from Lagos or the central Algarve resorts.

Arrive relatively early for the best selection, though the market continues through the morning. Bring cash, as not all vendors accept cards.

This is a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning, especially if you have self-catering accommodation and enjoy cooking with fresh, local ingredients.
