Portimão's annual tribute to the humble sardine. The Festival da Sardinha fills the waterfront with grilled sardines, local dishes, traditional crafts, and live music every evening. A beloved local tradition and one of the Algarve's tastiest summer events. Early August 2026.
The Festival da Sardinha (Sardine Festival) takes place in early August 2026 on the Portimão waterfront, celebrating the Algarve's deep connection to the sardine. Portimão was historically one of Portugal's most important sardine canning centres, and this festival keeps that heritage alive.
The waterfront fills with stands serving freshly grilled sardines alongside local Algarve dishes, crafts, and produce. Live music plays every evening on the main stage. The atmosphere is relaxed, festive, and thoroughly local — this is as authentic as Algarve food festivals get.
Free entry. Food and drinks purchased at the stands. The festival runs for several evenings in early August — exact 2026 dates to be confirmed closer to the event. Located on the Portimão waterfront, easily walkable from the city centre.
