The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve is the circuit MotoGP riders actually look forward to. It is not flat, it is not forgiving, and it produces racing that is genuinely hard to predict. The Portuguese Grand Prix returns here on 20–22 November 2026, and if you have never been to a MotoGP weekend, this is one of the better places in Europe to experience it.

The circuit sits inland near Mexilhoeira Grande, about fifteen minutes from Portimão and twenty-five from Lagos, on a hilltop that catches the wind and offers long views over the western Algarve. The layout is a series of blind crests, elevation changes and off-camber corners that punish hesitation and reward commitment. Riders speak well of it, which is rare, and the racing reflects that — overtakes happen in places they should not, and the outcome is often in doubt until the final laps.

The weekend runs Friday through Sunday. Friday is practice and qualifying. Saturday brings more practice, qualifying for the main race, and the sprint — a shorter race that has become one of the most watchable parts of the weekend. Sunday is the Grand Prix itself, usually starting mid-afternoon. If you can only attend one day, Sunday is the obvious choice, but Saturday's sprint is increasingly worth the trip on its own.

Accommodation is the single biggest logistical challenge. Portimão, Alvor, Praia da Rocha and Lagos book out months in advance, and prices roughly double for the weekend. If you are reading this in 2026 and have not yet booked, your options will be limited to private rentals further afield or hotels in Silves, Lagoa and the inland villages. Start looking early, and expect to pay more than you would for a normal November weekend.

Getting to the circuit is straightforward by car — follow the N125 west from Portimão and turn off near Mexilhoeira Grande. Parking is plentiful but exit traffic on Sunday afternoon is slow and predictable. Shuttle buses run from Portimão and Lagos on race days, and while they add time, they remove the stress of parking and leaving. If you are staying in either town, the shuttle is the better choice.

November in the Algarve is mild — daytime temperatures typically range from 16 to 20 degrees — but it is not the height of summer, and rain is possible. The grandstands are uncovered, and the circuit is exposed to wind. Bring layers, a waterproof jacket, sun cream and a hat. You will likely need all of them at different points in the day.

Tickets are already on sale via the circuit's official site. General admission gives you access to the outer viewing banks, which are free-roaming and offer good sightlines on several corners. Grandstand seats cost more but provide a fixed vantage point and are worth it if you want to watch the main straight or turn one, where much of the action concentrates. Three-day passes offer better value than single-day tickets if you plan to attend more than one day.

One administrative note: some third-party listings and older calendars show the race on 13–15 November. The circuit and official MotoGP calendar both confirm 20–22 November. Double-check your dates before booking travel.
