About This Place
At 902m, Fóia is the highest point in the Algarve — the summit of the Serra de Monchique, with 360° views from the Atlantic coast to the Spanish border. Drive to the top, or hike from Monchique town.
Fóia
The highest point in the Algarve at 902 metres, Fóia is the rooftop of the Serra de Monchique. On clear days the panorama stretches from Cape St. Vincent in the southwest to the Spanish border in the east — the entire Algarve laid out below.
How to Visit
You can drive to the summit on the EN266-3 from Monchique town. There's a car park, a viewpoint platform, and a few cafés and shops selling local crafts and Medronho (the famous Monchique fire-water).
The Hike from Monchique
For the more athletic, the PR1 MCQ — Trilho da Fóia is a 13.8 km circular hike from Monchique town centre.
- Distance: 13.8 km loop
- Elevation gain: ~600m
- Difficulty: Hard
- Time: 5–6 hours
- Highlights: Eucalyptus and chestnut forests, mountain springs, panoramic ridgelines, and the summit views
Why It's Special
Fóia gives you the Algarve from above. Cooler than the coast (often 5–10°C colder — bring a layer), it's a different ecosystem entirely — with eucalyptus, chestnut, and cork oak forests, and a network of springs that feed Monchique's famous spas.
Tips
- Visit on a clear day for the views — winter and early summer mornings are best
- Driving up takes ~25 minutes from Monchique town
- Stop in Monchique town for lunch on the way down — try the medronho and chestnut cake
- Bring layers in any season — it's noticeably cooler than the coast
Getting There
From Portimão, take the N266 north through Monchique. The summit road (EN266-3) is signposted from Monchique town. About 50 minutes from the central coast.
