About This Place
A tiny schist village in the Serra do Caldeirão above Castro Marim, best known to hikers as the overnight stop between Via Algarviana Sectors 2 and 3.
Furnazinhas sits high in the hills of the Castro Marim municipality, in the eastern reaches of the Serra do Caldeirão. It is a genuinely small place — a couple of dozen houses built from the local schist, a chapel, a communal oven, and a village square with a Via Algarviana information board.
The village has been the subject of a slow restoration effort, and several of the traditional houses have been repaired using original methods rather than rendered in cement, which is why the place still looks like itself. The surrounding hillsides are terraced, much of it long abandoned, and the vegetation is cistus, holm oak and strawberry tree — the last of which is distilled into medronho, the local firewater.
If you are curious about the eastern interior but not planning to walk it, a guided day from the coast is the practical way to see this landscape and the Guadiana border towns.
For walkers
Furnazinhas is the end of Sector 2 of the Via Algarviana (14.3 km from Balurcos) and the start of Sector 3, a longer and harder 22.6 km day over the hills to Vaqueiros.
This matters practically: the official trail notes flag water as available only at the start of Sector 2, and only at the end of Sector 3. Furnazinhas itself is a reliable water point, so fill up here. There is no shop worth the name and no cash machine — the nearest is back down in Castro Marim. Accommodation exists but is very limited; book ahead through the Via Algarviana partner network.
Getting there
There is no useful public transport. Access is by road from Castro Marim, roughly 20 km south, on narrow winding lanes. Most people arrive on foot.
