About This Place
Long curved sandy beach in a sheltered bay, with good swimming conditions and moderate development.
Meia Praia is a long, sand-backed beach east of Lagos, stretching for several kilometers. It's one of the Algarve's longest continuous stretches of golden sand, gently sloping and wide, even at high tide. The beach is sheltered from Atlantic swell by offshore rock formations, making it calmer than exposed western beaches—good for swimming and less dramatic but more accessible.
The beach has a developed seafront with restaurants, bars, and water sports operators. It's popular with families and less adventurous swimmers. The sand is firm and wide, backing onto a salt lagoon (Lagoa de Alvor) where you can see herons and other wading birds if you look carefully.
Meia Praia's real value is as a gateway to the Alvor Lagoon ecosystem. The lagoon is a significant wetland for migratory birds and is protected as an Natura 2000 site. Kayak and boat tours operate here, offering quiet water exploration—a different experience from open ocean adventures. You might see flamingos, egrets, spoonbills, and terns.
Unlike the dramatic cliffs and caves further west, Meia Praia represents a different Algarve: gentler, wetter, ecologically rich. The tidal flats and marshes of Alvor create an entirely different landscape from the rocky western coast. In ecological terms, the Ria Formosa system (which includes Alvor Lagoon) is one of Europe's most important bird sanctuaries.
For a day at the beach combined with nature observation, Meia Praia is highly accessible.
