Praia da Falesia

About This Place

Six kilometres of golden sand beneath towering red and orange cliffs — one of Europe's best beaches. Three distinct sections, stunning cliff-top walks, and uncrowded space even in peak summer.

Praia da Falésia is a 6km stretch of golden sand running between Olhos de Água and Vilamoura, backed by some of the most dramatic cliffs in the Algarve. The towering sandstone formations glow in shades of red, orange, ochre, and white — constantly reshaped by wind and rain into sculptured pillars and ravines.

The Three Sections

The beach has distinct character depending on where you access it. The western end near Olhos de Água has the tallest cliffs, rising 42 metres above the sand. The central section at Açoteias is the most popular stretch — golden sand, towering orange cliffs, and kilometres of beach in both directions. The eastern end towards Vilamoura has lower cliffs and easier access.

Access Points

Three main access points serve the beach: Pine Cliffs (western end) with boardwalk paths and around 60 steps down; Açoteias (central) with concrete stairs from the clifftop car park, around 80 steps; and Olhos de Água (eastern) with beach-level access from the village, no cliff stairs needed.

The Clifftop Trail

One of the best free walks in the Algarve runs along the top of these cliffs. A flat, easy dirt path follows the cliff edge for most of the 6km, shaded by pines in sections, with spectacular views down to the sand and out to the Atlantic. Walking the full length takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Safety

The erosion that created this scenery makes the cliffs fragile. Sections collapse periodically, especially after heavy winter rain. Never climb on the cliff face or shelter beneath overhangs.

Practical Info

Praia da Falésia has been rated one of the best beaches in the world by TripAdvisor. Walk 5–10 minutes from any main entry point and the crowds thin dramatically. The beach has lifeguards, sun loungers, and beach bars in season. Pine Cliffs Resort sits above the western end.
