A scenic circular walk through the Algarve hills to the refreshing Queda do Vigário waterfall, passing through traditional village landscapes.
Alte is often called the most traditional village in the Algarve, with whitewashed houses, cobbled streets, and natural springs. This trail takes you from the village to the beautiful Queda do Vigário waterfall.
Queda do Vigário is a 24-meter waterfall cascading into a natural pool. The waterfall originates from the Fonte Pequena and Fonte Grande springs in Alte village and is most impressive after winter rains.
The circular route passes through landscapes of carob, olive, and almond trees - traditional Algarve agriculture. The ascent to Alcaria do João offers panoramic views before descending to the waterfall.
Spring is ideal - the waterfall flows strongly and the hillsides are covered in wildflowers. By late summer, the waterfall may be reduced to a trickle or completely dry.
Before or after your hike, explore Alte's charming streets, visit the Igreja Matriz church, and cool off at the Fonte Grande spring.
