About This Place
Remote inland village on the Guadiana River facing Spanish village of Sanlúcar de Guadiana. Medieval castle, river beaches, almost total tranquility. Zip wire across the river.
Alcoutim is a small, atmospheric town on the north bank of the Guadiana River, which forms the natural border between Portugal and Spain. It's a place for river walks, birdwatching, and peace—the opposite of the crowded coastal resorts. The town sits on a high terrace overlooking the water, with a castle ruin at the top and narrow streets winding down to the riverside.
History
Alcoutim's castle dates back to the 13th century and was built as a defence against Spanish incursions. The walls still stand, offering views across the river to Ayamonte in Spain (where a mirror castle sits directly opposite). The town itself retains its medieval street layout and feels genuinely lived-in rather than touristy.
What to Do
The River Guadiana itself is the main attraction. Walking trails hug the water's edge, and the river is home to egrets, herons, cormorants, and fish eagles. Spring and autumn bring the best birdwatching. Canoe and kayak trips are available locally, offering a different perspective on the landscape.
The castle ruin is a short walk up from the town centre. The view is worth the climb: the Algarve rolling inland behind you, Spain across the water ahead, and often storks nesting on the Spanish castle.
The Via Algarviana long-distance trail passes nearby, offering day-walk options into the interior.
Getting There
Alcoutim is about 60km east of Faro, via the inland EN125 and EN122. It's remote by Algarve standards—no beach access, no airport nearby. But that's part of its appeal.
When to Visit
Spring (March–May) is ideal: wildflowers, migrating birds, and warm days. Autumn (September–November) is also good. Summer can be hot inland; winter sees the fewest visitors.
