About This Place

Tiny cliff-top fishing village west of Luz. One small beach, handful of restaurants, almost no development. Exactly what the Algarve looked like before mass tourism.

Burgau is a glimpse into what the Algarve looked like before mass tourism arrived. The village sits on a clifftop overlooking a single small beach. It's tiny—maybe a dozen buildings arranged around the cove. A steep stone stairway leads down to the beach. The place has maintained a fishing village character that has vanished elsewhere. Houses are modest, whitewashed, painted in fading colours. The pace is slow, the vibe authentic.

What to Do

The beach is small and sheltered, backed by the village cliffside. It's rarely crowded, even in summer. The water is calm and good for swimming. There's no infrastructure beyond a couple of beach bars. The experience is basic and genuine—exactly what you get if you want an undeveloped Algarve beach.

The village itself offers little in terms of formal attractions. There are a few simple restaurants, mostly family-run establishments catering to the village residents and the trickle of visitors. The food is straightforward—fresh fish, grilled simply. This isn't fine dining; it's honest food at honest prices.

Walking is the main activity. The clifftop paths to the east and west offer spectacular views. To the east, you can walk toward Praia da Luz. To the west, the cliffs rise dramatically. The landscape is rugged and beautiful, with few people. A short steep path leads down to the beach for swimming.

Accommodation is minimal—a handful of simple guest houses or holiday rentals. Nothing is plush; everything is functional. The appeal of Burgau is that it hasn't been modernised, polished, or packaged for mass tourism. It remains a working fishing village where tourists are visitors, not the main business.

Getting There

Burgau is on a minor road off the EN125, west of Lagos and east of Luz. The village is tiny and compact. Parking is on the street or in small car parks near the beach. Buses connect to larger towns. Faro airport is 80km away.

When to Visit

Burgau is peaceful year-round and least crowded outside summer. The village doesn't have a tourist season per se. May–June and September–October offer the best weather. Summer (June–August) is warm but quiet even in peak season. Winter is mild and perfect for walks. The beaches are swimmable April–October.
