Praia Dona Ana

Updated 8 days ago

About This Place

One of the most photographed beaches in Europe — sculpted golden cliffs, sea stacks, sheltered turquoise water, and kayak-accessible grottoes. Just minutes from Lagos old town.

Praia Dona Ana is one of the most photographed beaches in the Algarve, and one of the most iconic in Lagos. Framed by golden sandstone cliffs sculpted into dramatic pillars, arches, and sea stacks, the beach sits in a sheltered cove just south of the town centre.

The Rock Formations

The coast around Dona Ana is littered with sea stacks and grottoes carved by centuries of Atlantic storms — calm in summer, savage in winter. Kayak tours from Lagos regularly pass through, weaving between the formations. The stratified red and yellow sandstone glows in the morning and late-afternoon light.

The Beach

The beach itself is about 160 metres long and 70 metres deep — small by Algarve standards, but beautifully formed. The water is calm and clear thanks to the shelter of the Ponta da Piedade headland to the south, making it excellent for snorkeling. There's a restaurant on the beach, and sun loungers and parasols are available for hire in season.

Access

A well-built staircase leads down from the clifftop car park. There's also a sloped access path. The beach is about a 25-minute walk from Lagos town centre, or a short drive. Parking is available at the top.

Nearby

Praia Dona Ana sits between Lagos marina and Ponta da Piedade — the famous rock formation headland with some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in Europe. Boat trips depart from the marina to explore the grottoes and sea caves. The stretch of coastline between Dona Ana and Ponta da Piedade is also walkable along the clifftops.

Practical Info

The beach can get busy in peak summer — arrive early for a good spot. It's quieter in the morning and outside July/August. Lagos is well served by public transport from Faro and other Algarve towns.
