Praia do Amado

Updated 8 days ago

About This Place

The Algarve's premier surf beach — consistent Atlantic waves on a wide sandy bay within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. Surf schools, dramatic red cliffs, and wild coastal scenery year-round.

Praia do Amado is one of the Algarve's most celebrated surf beaches, set in a wide sandy bay on the wild west coast within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. Backed by striking red and ochre cliffs, it faces west-northwest and catches Atlantic swell consistently — making it one of the most reliable surf spots in Portugal.

Surfing

The beach works for all levels depending on conditions. In summer, gentler 2–3ft waves on the inside are ideal for beginners, and several surf schools operate right on the sand with lessons, board hire, and safety guidance. In winter, the waves get significantly bigger and the beach is best left to experienced surfers — conditions can be powerful and the currents strong.

Intermediates get the most out of Amado on mid-sized days, with slower-peeling peaks across the middle of the bay offering plenty of room to practise.

Beyond the Surf

The coastal walk connecting Amado to Praia da Bordeira to the north is one of the most dramatic stretches on the entire Vicentina coast — towering cliffs, empty beaches, and far fewer people than the southern Algarve. The surrounding area is part of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, with wild flora, birdlife, and a raw, undeveloped feel.

Facilities

There's a surf school and board rental right on the beach, plus a couple of cafés with terraces overlooking the bay. The beach has lifeguards in summer.

Practical Info

Praia do Amado is about 5 minutes south of Carrapateira, 15 minutes from Vila do Bispo, and 25 minutes from Aljezur. It's well signposted. Parking is at the top of the cliff above the beach. The west coast is windier and cooler than the south coast — bring a layer even in summer.
